E-Prescribing Incentives with EMR Software
EMR software with E-prescribing takes advantage of the incentive program based on e-prescribing quality measures currently included in the Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI). The Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (MIPPA) currently offers incentives to eligible professionals who are successfully e-prescribing. EMR software e-prescribing links prescriptive efforts with the patient clinical record where other quality measures can be easily monitored.

Qualifiers

Incentive amounts will be 2% of the total estimated allowed charges for professional services covered by Medicare Part B.
- Estimated allowed Medicare Part B charges for the e-prescribing measure codes are at least 10% of total Medicare Part B allowed charges.
Eligible professional may be one of the following:
- Physician
- Physical or occupational therapist
- Qualified speech-language pathologist
- Nurse practitioner
- Physician assistant
- Clinical nurse specialist
- Certified registered nurse anesthetist
- Certified nurse midwife
- Clinical social worker
- Clinical psychologist
- Registered dietitian
- Nutrition professional
- Qualified audiologist
Successful e-prescriber
Successful EMR software e-prescribers must report e-prescribing quality measures on at least 50% of applicable Medicare Part B claims during the reporting year. Under the new 2009 PQRI program measures, eligible professionals may qualify for two incentive payments: one for successfully e-prescribing by reporting the e-prescribing quality measure, the other for satisfactorily submitting data with EMR software on other quality measures under the PQRI.
